Kohl's is the latest major retailer to announce that it will be opening its doors early on Thanksgiving night to give shoppers a head start on Black Friday shopping.

The Wisconsin-based retailer, which has numerous stores in Utah, will open at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Day. Stores will be open for 28 straight hours, from 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 28, through midnight Friday nationwide.

"Shopping over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend has become a much-anticipated tradition enjoyed with friends and family," said Michelle Gass, Kohl's chief customer officer. "As many customers are eager to get a jump start on their shopping, we are opening our stores at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day as a convenience to our customers, who want to make Kohl's their first stop."

Opening on Thanksgiving evening is starting to be a trend for some major retailers looking to jumpstart the holiday buying season.

According to the website www.blackfriday.fm, Macy's, K-Mart and JC Penney have all announced 8 p.m. openings on Thanksgiving while Target and Toys R' Us are planning 9 p.m. openings and Walmart will open at 10 p.m.
