Washington • Sen. Mike Lee's young political career is replete with instances in which he bucked convention and his own party in an attempt to advance his ideals.

His role in the government shutdown has led to a spike in national attention, tea party applause and tension in Republican ranks. But there have been other noteworthy moments in his nearly three years in office.
