Police in Woods Cross arrested a suspected drunken driver Thursday after he crashed his SUV, killing his friend.

The accident happened about 10:30 p.m. when David Helm, 47, crashed his Jeep Grand Cherokee into a parked tow truck at 1500 S. 1450 West, according to Woods Cross police Detective Adam Osoro. Passenger Trent Hansen, 47, sustained major injuries, Osoro added.

Hansen was flown to a nearby hospital but died from his injuries.

Osoro said officers could smell alcohol on Helm when they arrived. They later determined that he was intoxicated and booked him into the Davis County Jail on one count of automobile homicide. His bail was set at $25,000, cash-only.

Hansen lived in Woods Cross. Osoro said Helm had a Florida driver license but appeared to be living in Utah.
