An Eagle Mountain man died when the vehicle he was riding in crashed into a semi truck that had stopped at the scene of an earlier accident on Interstate 80 in southwestern Wyoming.

Wyoming Highway Patrol Sgt. Stephen Townsend said that 32-year-old Jeffrey Ryan died at the scene of the 9:22 a.m. Tuesday accident on westbound I-80, about 36 miles east of Evanston.

The Reser's Fine Foods truck, driven by Trent Mcdougal, 35, of Riverton, Utah, had come to a halt in the right westbound lane due to a road closure in effect at the earlier crash site.

Moments later, a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by 53-year-old Terry Shank, of Payson, Utah, approached the scene.

"For reasons unknown, [he] failed to see the stopped traffic ahead of him until just before impact. Shank swerved his vehicle to the left to avoid a collision, however, the right side of his vehicle struck the left side rear of Mcdougal's vehicle," Townsend said.

The pickup truck ended up in the I-80 median. The impact also pushed the semi off the roadway and into a barrow pit.

Shank was treated for minor injuries at Evanston Regional Hospital and released. Mcdougal was not hurt, Townsend said.

No citations were issued as the accident remained under investigation on Wednesday.
