Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will be in Salt Lake City on Saturday for a public speech.

Albright will deliver the eighth annual McCarthey Family Foundation lecture with the topic, "The Role of Independent Journalism in Diplomacy."

The talk at Rowland Hall, 720 S. Guardsman Way, is free and open to the public. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the speech begins at 7.

Albright was named head of the State Department by President Bill Clinton in 1997, becoming the first woman in U.S. history to hold that post. Currently she is a professor at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and serves on a number of boards and foundations.

She is the author of five books and in 2012 was awarded the nation's highest civilian honor, the U.S. Medal of Freedom, by President Barack Obama.
