Pleasant Grove rallied.
It rallied to hand the undefeated Davis Darts their first loss of the 2013 season 22-15 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs Friday night.
Wind's third touchdown of the game a 3-yard score with 3:55 remaining in fourth quarter gave Pleasant Grove a lightning-quick response to 15 unanswered points by the Darts.
It was due to Coleman Edwards' kick return a few minutes after Davis quarterback Colton Chronister found wideout Abel Porter for a 9-yard touchdown and seconds after Chronister's 2-point attempt found Davis Hanson to give the Darts a sudden 15-14 lead.
Edwards, a sophomore, had the ball roll to him, and he slowly approached his wave of blockers and bounced it outside, returning it to the Davis 20-yard line.
Wind's touchdown moments later followed by a 2-point conversion pass by Jeremiah Evans put the Vikings back on top.
"That's why we were not down on the sideline, that's why we were not down on ourselves, because we knew what we were capable of," Evans said. "We've obviously proved that we're a clutch team, and we just keep proving it."
The Vikings are used to nail-biters.
Despite being the No. 4 seed out of Region 4, they beat Herriman by one point on the road, beat American Fork by three, eked out a three-point win over Lehi and handed Timpview its only loss of the season during a 21-19 win in Week 2.
"We've been in five or six games just like this where down the stretch, we needed big plays to win, and these guys just stepped up over and over and over," Viking coach Les Hamilton said.
Pleasant Grove did. When the Darts dealt a jab, the Vikings responded with an uppercut to earn a trip to the 5A quarterfinals and a matchup with defending champion Jordan.
