A school bus driver died in a traffic crash with two large trucks Friday afternoon in West Jordan.

The crash occurred about 2 p.m. near Mountain View Highway(5880 West) and Old Bingham Highway (10000 South), according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

Jordan School District spokeswoman Sandy Riesgraf identified the victim as 55-year-old Stan Riley, who had been driving buses for the district for 11 years.

The bus was traveling north with no children on board when it collided with a large industrial truck and garbage truck from the Kennecott mine, called a cable truck, said West Jordan Fire Battallion Chief Steve Holmes.

Riley had just dropped off a group of elementary school children, said West Jordan Sgt. Dan Roberts. He said the eastbound industrial truck ran a red light.

The driver told police his brakes went out and Roberts said there were no skid marks in the intersection.

Riesgraf added that Riley was making his last run of the day to pick up high school students at the Jordan Applied Technology Center, where teenagers can earn community college credit.

Riley was being prepared for a flight by helicopter to a hospital, but died at the scene, Holmes said.

The drivers of the other two vehicles were not seriously injured.

Riesgraf said Riley was well-liked and well-known in the district and will be missed.

"Our loss is beyond words … Stan Riley was a bus driver who took great pride in his job and loved the students he served. He was loved and respected in return by fellow drivers. ... Our thoughts and prayers go out to Stan's family in this very difficult time," she said in a prepared statement.

Investigators are examining all three vehicles involved in the accident to determine what went wrong and if the industrial truck's brakes really failed. Roberts said brakes do sometimes go out, though industrial trucks are supposed to undergo safety inspections.

Northbound, eastbound and westbound traffic lanes of the intersection remained closed at the crash site until about 7:30 p.m, West Jordan police reported.
