Well, Jazz fans, your team is 1-11 and on pace to make futility history as it heads to New Orleans to start a three-game road trip. The silver lining? At least it's on the cheap. The NBA's highest payroll, meanwhile, is already in full on keep-the-reporters-outside-it's-team-meeting-time mode in Brooklyn. The New York Post's Tim Bontemps has the story following the Net's latest loss — this one a 108-98 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, in which Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce combined to go 10 for 31 in the game and were nowhere to be found in the locker room when the team finally opened it up.The Nets' star-studded (and presently 3-7) $102 million payroll will cost owner Mikhail Prokhorov nearly twice that after a luxury tax assessment. The Jazz have one of the league's lowest payrolls at about $56.7 million, according to HoopsWorld.com.

• Speaking of Portland, that Damian Lillard guy is pretty good.

• Last week, the Trib's Matt Piper brought you the story of a former Jazz ball boy who got the shoes Michael Jordan wore during his infamous "Flu Game " and recently decided to sell them. As of 8 a.m., Piper reports, the high bid was $37,023.

• The Boston Celtics, losers of three straight, have no intentions of trading point guard Rajon Rondo, Danny Ainge tells the Boston Globe.

History Lessons

On Nov. 19, 2004, the Detroit Pistons and the Indiana Pacers got into a little tiff at the Palace of Auburn Hills. If you haven't read Grantland's oral history of the Malice at the Palace, I highly recommend it.

Former Jazz point guard Jamaal Tinsley (who was not suspended for the "Malice in the Palace" fight) was on triple-double watch late in that game. He had 13 points, 8 assists and 8 steals. Though the game was called with under a minute left. He did, at one point, emerge from the tunnel holding a dustpan over his head. So ... whatever.

• Detroit News writer Chris McCosky recalls "trying to stop Jamaal Tinsley from going into the stands, and he went through me like I was butter. It was a pretty failed attempt on my part."• Stephen Jackson on Ron Artest and Tinsley after the game: "After we calmed down, [Artest] looked at me like, 'Jack, you think we going to get in trouble?' Jamaal Tinsley fell out laughing. I said, 'Are you serious, bro? Trouble? Ron, we'll be lucky if we have a freaking job.'"Tinsley certainly had a checkered past, but everybody I've talked to around the Jazz speak highly of what the point guard brought to the team before he was released earlier this month."Coming to an organization like this," Tinsley told the Trib last year, "usually they wouldn't sign guys like me, so they say. But who is that guy? Get to know that guy first, then make the judgment."

• Also on this day, but 25 years ago, John Stockton handed out 21 dimes in a win over the Phoenix Suns. Here's the box score from Basketball Reference.

EmpowerBall (because even Jazz fans deserve happiness)

Duke freshman Jabari Parker had 21 points, 10 rebounds and four assists last night against UNC Asheville. Here are two of those points.
