Scott Nichols played a critical role in Bingham's undefeated run to the Class 5A state title.

He's been rewarded for his work by being named the Gatorade Utah Football Player of the Year.

Nichols rushed for 1,675 yards and 20 touchdowns and caught 16 passes for 247 yards and three scores.

Nichols carried a heavier load in the state title game after starting quarterback Kyle Gearig was injured late in the first half. Nichols finished with 165 yards on 27 carries.

"Scott Nichols is an exceptional football player," Bingham offensive coordinator John Lambourne said in a statement. "His work ethic is tremendous. He is a great example who inspires his teammates. I have coached 30 years of high school football. A number of his performances this season rank up there among the best that I have seen."

Nichols, a senior, is undecided on his plans after high school.
