Snowy weather and frigid temperatures may cause some Utahns to be stranded on the side of the road this winter, and a new survey shows most probably won't be prepared if they are left out in the cold.
The National Weather Service on Wednesday reported that past week's average of daily highs and lows were 10 to 20 degrees below normal in Salt Lake City alone. The normal high for this time of year in Salt Lake City is 39 degrees.
According to a survey conducted by CarMax, only 24 percent of the 1,000 Americans surveyed have a winter emergency kit in their car, which would include:
• A flashlight
• Jumper cables
• A first-aid kit
• Flares or hazard triangles
• Warm clothes, gloves and a blanket
• An ice scraper
• A snow shovel
• Kitty litter — for traction on slick roadways
• Extra washer fluid
• Food and bottle water
• A cell phone charger
