The Mormon Church now officially states that its former ban on black men holding the priesthood is rooted in the racism of early Mormon leaders, not evelation ("Mormon church traces black priesthood ban to Brigham Young," Tribune, Dec. 10).
Bravo for the church to do history on its theology. There's still more of such work to do.
When will it admit that its ban on women holding the priesthood is based on cultural sexism, not revelation. The Book of Mormon clearly states that "all are alike unto God ... black and white, bond and free, male and female. (2 Nephi 26:30). When will it admit that its condemnation of same-sex marriages is similarly based on cultural homophobia?
