A father and his adult son escaped a two-alarm fire early Tuesday morning in Cottonwood Heights, but it could be some time before they can return to their home.

Public safety dispatchers said the blaze was reported about 2:30 a.m. at 3361 Winesap Road (7245 South) after the father awoke to the smell of smoke.

Unified Fire Department crews were able to contain the blaze to two rooms inside the home, but smoke and water damage throughout the structure was extensive, estimated at more than $50,000.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, UFA Battalion Chief Curtis Day said.

The Utah Red Cross was assisting the residents of the home with temporary shelter needs.
