A man was in critical condition Friday night after a car hit him in Tooele County Friday.

The accident happened on State Road 36, north of Tooele at Lake Point, when the 20-year-old man ran out into traffic and was hit by an SUV. Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Randy Riches said reports came in at 7:26 p.m. saying the man was running beside the highway but by the time troopers arrived he had been hit. Troopers found him lying in the left turn lane.

The man suffered two broken legs. A medical helicopter transported him to University Hospital in critical condition, Riches said.

The man's name was not immediately released Friday evening.

According to Riches, police in the area had received a report of a shoplifter at a nearby Flying J gas station just before the man was hit. However, investigators Friday night were still trying to determine if the incidents were connected.
