"Our hero brother ... lived his life with integrity," Wride's sister Marci Taylor said, choking back tears.
Wride family spokesman Johnny Revill said the first course of action taken by Wride's widow, Nannette, was to go to the hospital to visit Deputy Greg Sherwood, who was shot in the head in Santaquin, shortly after Wride died, by someone in the same pickup truck. Sherwood remains hospitalized, and when Nannette Wride went to visit him in an intensive care unit, "the seas parted," Revill said. Sherwood is expected to recover.
Relatives said Nannette Wride also is praying for the family of the pickup's suspected driver, Jose Garcia-Jauregui, 27, who died after being shot by law enforcement officers. A 17-year-old girl was with Garcia-Jauregui; detectives are investigating what, if any role she had in Thursday's shootings.
In Eagle Mountain, about 100 gathered to share memories of Wride. Officials reflected on Wride's commitment and affection for the residents of the town he served for about 5 years. Mayor Christopher Pengra read a message from one man whom Wride pulled over; the man's bumper sticker identified him as a Vietnam veteran.
"When I rolled down the window, he stood back at the side of the road and saluted me," the man wrote.
The Utah 1033 Foundation, which supports families of fallen officers, has delivered a $25,000 check to Wride's family.
The Utah County Deputies Association is accepting donations for both the Wride and Sherwood families. Donations can be dropped off at the Utah County Sheriff's Office, 3075 N. Main St. in Spanish Fork; the Utah County Judicial Office Health and Justice Building, 151 S. University Ave. in Provo; or the Eagle Mountain Patrol Office, 1680 Heritage Drive in Eagle Mountain.
