It has been a while since a major new hotel-casino-resort property has opened on the Las Vegas Strip, largely due to the down economy.

That's why there is some anticipation about the 1,600-room SLS Las Vegas is scheduled to open on Labor Day weekend. It will be located where the long-time Las Vegas icon Sahara Hotel was located. The Sahara, originally built in 1952 as the sixth major hotel in Las Vegas, closed in May of 2011.

SLS is owned by sbe, which operates hotels in Beverly Hills, South Beach and New York City. It will feature nightlife, dining and entertainment. So far, SLS Las Vegas will include a reinvention of the popular Los Angeles nightspot The Sayers Club and restaurants including The Bazaar by Jose Andres, Katsuya, Cleo, 800 Degrees, Umami Burger and The Triddle Cafe.
