A five-vehicle crash in west Salt Lake City injured two women, both of whom had to be extricated from the wreckage before being transported to the hospital early Wednesday afternoon.

Salt Lake City police Capt. John Cardona said the accident at 700 West Redwood Road occurred just before 1 p.m. when a southbound car ran a red light and collided with two eastbound cars as they entered the intersection.

Two more vehicles crashed in chain-reaction accidents immediately afterward.

Cardona said two women were pinned briefly inside one of the cars and initially were feared to be in critical condition. However, once they were freed and examined, their injuries were deemed minor, consisting of bruises and lacerations.

The women were transported to the hospital as precaution for further examination.

No citations were immediately issued as the accidents remained under investigation.
