The sudden onset of heavy snowfall along the Wasatch Front Wednesday afternoon prompted the Utah Department of Transportation to issue winter driving-related advisories.
As of noon, UDOT restricted both Big and Little Cottonwood canyons to tire chains or four-wheel drive vehicles. The restrictions were to apply into late afternoon at least, if not longer.
The wind-driven snow pounding Wasatch County's Daniels Canyon also was a factor in a crash involving two semi-trailer rigs that left that stretch of Highway 40 closed down early Wednesday afternoon.
While snow showers were expected to ease somewhat by mid- to late-afternoon, more snow was expected to fall between 7 p.m. Wednesday and 1 a.m. Thursday from Salt Lake City north to the Idaho border and beyond, as well as southeast of the Great Salt Lake.
Making travel even more challenging were crosswinds gusting to 50 mph or higher, especially along Interstate 80 east to the Nevada border and Interstate 70 near the Sevier-Emery County line.
