Sports briefs: MLS commissioner names expansion candidates

SOCCER • Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber says Atlanta, Minneapolis, Sacramento, San Diego and Texas sites are being considered as expansion cites. MLS will increase to 21 teams when New York City and Orlando, Fla., start play in 2015. The league has said it plans to reach 24 teams by 2020. Garber spoke about additional cities Thursday during a conference call to discuss the league's purchase of the troubled Chivas USA franchise.

Braves ink young SS



MLB • The Atlanta Braves and shortstop Andrelton Simmons agreed on a $58┬ámillion, seven-year contract Thursday, a record deal for the latest young star locked up by the NL East champs. Simmons, 24, hit 17 home runs and won his first Gold Glove in 2013.

• Super Bowl winning Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson sent a tweet Thursday telling Texas Rangers fans he would attend spring training Monday in Surprise, Ariz.
