The Obama Administration plans to shrink the size of the U.S. military. That may mean a lot more in North Carolina, with 111,611 active-duty military in the last count, than it does in Vermont, which had 94.

Utah falls somewhere between, ranked No. 32 in the number of active-duty military. The graphic shows the number in each state and where each state ranks.

In 2012, there were 1.2 million soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen in the states and in Washington, D.C., according to the Department of Defense.
