Cardinals, Carpenter reach $52M deal
BASEBALL • The St. Louis Cardinals and third baseman Matt Carpenter have agreed to a $52 million, six-year contract. The deal includes a team option for a seventh year in 2020 at $18.5 million. Should the St. Louis decline the option, they would pay Carpenter a $2 million buyout.
Carpener hit .318 while leading the National League in hits (199), doubles (55) and runs (126) last season while playing second base. He is moving to third this season.
• Brett Anderson pitched three positive innings in his first start against his former team on Saturday in Scottsdale, Ariz., helping the Colorado Rockies to a 5-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics.
The left-hander allowed one run on three hits and struck out one.
Anderson was Oakland's opening-day starter a year ago. But he spent four months on the disabled list, was demoted to the bullpen and then traded in December.
Troy Tulowitzki had an RBI double in a three-run first against A's starter A.J. Griffin.
Jaguars sign former Seahawk Bryant
NFL • The Jacksonville Jaguars and free agent defnsive lineman Red Bryant reached agreement on a four-year contract. The deal Saturday will reunite Bryant with his former Seattle coordinator, Jaguars coach Gus Bradley.
Jacksonville already re-signed QB Chad Henne to a two-year, $8 million deal.
Bryant, 29, spent six years in Seattle, making 121 tackles. He missed one game over the past three seasons, recording 87 tackles, 2½ sacks and two interceptions in that time. He was a fourth-round pick in 2008. He was released by the Seahawks last month.
• Darrell Stuckey and the San Diego Chargers have agreed to a multiyear contract that keeps the safety and special teams standout from hitting the free-agent market.
