A man died in an auto-pedestrian accident in Tooele before full light Monday morning.

James Wilson, 41, was walking along the shoulder near Highway 112 and Industrial Loop Road about 7 a.m. when he was struck from behind by a car, said Tooele police Capt. Paul Wimmer.

Wimmer said witnesses told officers that Wilson had been walking on or along the white line, dangerously close to the travel lanes, just prior to being hit. Wilson was walking in the dark, dressed in dark clothing, and "just may have stepped too far" from the shoulder, Wimmer said.

"Everything we have learned at this point in the investigation is that he was most likely in the travel lane when he was struck," Wimmer said.

Wilson died at the scene, Wimmer said.

No citations were issued to the 30-year-old male driver. While the incident remained under investigation, Wimmer said it appeared the driver was not impaired or driving erratically.
