A water main break forced South Jordan public safety officials to severely restrict traffic along a compromised stretch of 11400 South on Wednesday.

South Jordan police spokesman Sam Winkler said 911 calls reporting flooding from the broken 30-inch line at 700 W. 11400 South came in just prior to 4 a.m. Wednesday. Emergency workers soon discovered that water had undermined the road, forcing closure of all but one westbound lane until further notice.

"Additionally, access to northbound 700 West from 11400 South is closed. Residents in the area are advised to use Brooke-N-Lance Lane to access the neighborhood," Winkler said.

It was expected to take several days to complete repairs. Traffic restrictions in the area were expected to be in place not only through the Wednesday afternoon commute, but possibly the remainder of the week.

Therefore, motorists were to use 9000 South, 10600 South, 12300 South and Bangerter Highway exits off of Interstate 15 as alternate routes for westbound travel.

The failed line Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, which had not yet determined the cause for the break.

No homes or businesses were reported damaged.
