The body of a BASE jumper was recovered Saturday in Grand County after the 35-year-old man jumped from a cliff above Mineral Canyon on Friday evening.
According to Grand County Sheriff's authorities, the man died after jumping in an area known as The Sweet Spot at about 7 p.m. on Friday. Police were called to the area after the man's friends were able to get cell phone service.
Search-and-rescue teams went to the canyon, about 40 miles west of Moab, and began searching for the body, but because of the difficult terrain, the search was called off Friday evening.
Crews began searching again 6:30 a.m. Saturday, taking about six hours to locate the man's body. They then lowered him to the bottom of the canyon using several belays down "an extreme talus slope," according to Grand County Sheriff's authorities.
The distance from the top of the cliff to where the jumper was found was estimated to be about 400 feet.
Details of what went wrong with the jump were not immediately released. The man's identification was not released Sunday, pending family notification.
