Utah Transit Authority has teamed with San Diego-based SmartDrive Systems to use its video-based operator performance and safety program to help train its employees to be better drivers.

The system, which will be installed the middle of this year, uses vehicle recorders to capture videos and data as drivers work their daily routes. The videos are then sent to the company's SmartDrive Review Center where specialists review them for training for drivers.

The system will be deployed for UTA's 600 buses and paratransit vehicles. SmartDrive's safety program has been deployed on more than 10,000 transit vehicles in the last year.
