NFL • The Cleveland Browns released veteran quarterback Vince Young on Monday, a few days after drafting Johnny Manziel. However, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam made it clear that Manziel will have to earn everything he gets and won't jump Brian Hoyer on the depth chart just because he has a Heisman Trophy, celebrity friends or fame.
The team signed Young and quarterback Tyler Thigpen on May 1.
• St. Louis Rams receiver Stedman Bailey has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.
Ex-Minnesota QB jailed in assault
college football • Former Minnesota quarterback Philip Nelson was charged Monday with two counts of felony assault after a weekend fight outside a Mankato bar that left another man gravely injured.
Nelson, 20, kicked 24-year-old Isaac Dallas Kolstad in the head while Kolstad was lying on the ground after being struck by another man early Sunday morning, according to a criminal complaint. Kolstad, 24, a former Minnesota State-Mankato linebacker, was in critical condition Monday with a head injury.
Nelson played in 11 games last season, but announced afterward that he would transfer to Rutgers and what he said was a more pass-friendly offense.
Wiggins takeslead in California
CYCLING • Bradley Wiggins of Britain, the 2012 Tour de France winner and Olympic time trial gold medalist, powered to a 44-second victory in the Stage 2 individual time trial in Folsom, Calif., and moved into the race lead at the Tour of California. Wiggins (SKY) completed the flat 12.5-mile course in 23 minutes and 18 seconds at an average speed of 32.16 mph. Rohan Dennis (Garmin-Sharp) of Australia was second in 24:02. American Taylor Phinney (BMC) was third in 24:10.
