Orem • Orem police say a man suspected of driving impaired crashed into the vehicle of the agency's one officer whose sole job is to spot alcohol violations.

Orem police spokesman Lt. Craig Martinez said the 24-year-old man had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol when he was arrested Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was booked into jail but has been released.

Martinez says the man fled the scene of an accident before driving the wrong way and hitting the officer's car. Police say the man had been driving his girlfriend's new car.

The officer is the city's lone alcohol enforcement officer on the 100-member police force.

Martinez said the officer wasn't hurt, but his car was damaged.
