There has been little in the way of good news for BYU's football program the last few months, but on Saturday coach Bronco Mendenhall received a nugget. Kody Wilstead, an all-state quarterback from St. George's Pine View High, committed to become a Cougar. Wilstead, a 6-foot-6 rising senior, helped the Panthers get to the 3A state championship game last fall. He will sign in February, then depart on an LDS Church mission before enrolling at BYU. Wilstead threw for 4,390 yards and 36 touchdowns last season. Wilstead committed after a 7-on-7 competition was held on BYU's campus featuring Pine View and dozens of other schools in the Intermountain West. Wilstead delayed his commitment a day because BYU coaches were participating in the Cougar Challenge a triathlon on Friday. According to Total Blue Sports, Wilstead also had offers from Louisville, Southern Utah, Weber State and San Diego State. He plans to graduate from Pine View in December. Of course, Wilstead won't suit up until the 2017 season, at the earliest, but it will be interesting to see if he can run Robert Anae's offense. He's more of a pocket passer than a dual-threat quarterback such as Taysom Hill. Still, reviews of Wilstead's game tapes shows he's quite mobile for a 6-6 athlete but certainly not a runner like Hill is. Local media members haven't been afforded the opportunity to talk to Mendenhall or athletic director Tom Holmoe since spring camp ended back in March. Certainly, the men haven't been made available locally since news broke in May that BYU is conducting, or has conducted, an investigation into claims of improper benefits in the football program. Former director of football operations director Duane Busby is said to be the target of the review, sources have told The Tribune. Busby abruptly resigned in March. That changes on Monday, as BYU conducts its annual football media day at the BYU broadcast building on campus. Unfortunately, I won't be there to cover it for you. I'm currently at Cape Canaveral in Florida, getting ready to embark on a Caribbean cruise with my family, a vacation that was planned a year ago to celebrate our wedding anniversary (25 years!) and my kids' high school and college graduations. Don't know what I will do without internet access for a week, but I will manage, I suppose. Don't worry, though. The Tribune will have media day covered from every angle. Columnist Kurt Kragthorpe and seasoned sportswriter Steve Luhm will fill you in on all you need to know. Every year during media day, BYU releases some sort of news. Last year, there was an announcement about future bowl plans. What will it be this year? My hunch is that BYU will announce a home-and-home football series with Penn State, for starters. I know, that's not exactly a well-kept secret. Until then, Bon Voyage!
