South Salt Lake police on Tuesday were looking for numerous possible suspects and witnesses in a fatal overnight shooting.

Police spokesman Gary Keller said a 911 call came in about 8 p.m. Monday reporting gunfire near 150 East and Helm Avenue (3645 South).

Officers arrived to find a 40-year-old West Valley City man dead inside a silver Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck from a single gunshot wound to the upper body.

A front seat passenger in the truck — a 17-year-old male, also from West Valley City — suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to his arm and torso, according to Keller.

Also in the vehicle were three other males and two females, ages 13 and 19.

"It looks like it happened quickly," Keller said, noting the vehicle was parked in the traffic lanes with its doors found open. The six surviving occupants fled south on foot on State Street. A group of three or four people was seen leaving the scene to the north, into an alley.

"We'd like to talk to them," Keller said of the northbound group.

Other abandoned vehicles were found in the road; they belonged to other witnesses who fled the gunfire, Keller said.

Investigators believe someone fired at the pickup from Helm Avenue or from the adjacent alley, Keller said. Police are withholding the victim's name pending family notification.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to called SSLPD at 801-840-4000.
