Albion Basin Road, the alpine area at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon, opens Friday for the summer season.

To help reduce traffic, Alta will sponsor a free shuttle service to take visitors from the end of the paved Little Cottonwood Canyon Road to the upper end of Albion Basin Road, according to a news release.

The large passenger vans are available on weekends and holidays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Traffic restrictions sometimes occur, especially during weekends and holidays because of limited parking and public safety concerns on the road, according to the release.

"Forest visitors are encouraged to consider visiting during non-peak periods and plan alternate hiking routes during these peak periods. Roadside parking on the Albion Basin Road is prohibited," the release reads. "Visitors are also encouraged to hike into Albion Basin from the base area via Albion Meadows Trail as an alternative to driving the road."

Reservations for the Albion Basin Campground sites are available starting July 18, and can be made by visiting recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777, according to the release. The campground may open earlier depending upon snow melt, the release adds.
