Looking to expand your mind this weekend? Here are two museum exhibits you should consider:
• "Early Utah Masterpieces," an exhibit of important and historically significant works in the Utah Statae Fine Art Collection, is now on display at Discovery Gateway, 444 W. 100 South, Salt Lake City, in The Gateway shopping center. The show, part of the Utah Arts & Museum's Traveling Exhibit Program, features 26 giclee prints of works from the state's collection that go back to the 19th century. The exhibit will run through Aug. 1.
• On Friday, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (at 410 Campus Center Drive, on the University of Utah campus) opens "Moksha: Photography by Fazal Sheikh." The exhibition of black-and-white photographs depicts the lives of widows, a marginalized segment of Hindu society in India, who seek refuge and sanctuary in the holy city of Vrindavan — where they pray for moksha, a release from the constant cycle of death and rebirth in which Hindus believe. The exhibit runs through Nov. 30, and will be accompanied starting Aug. 8 by a companion exhibition, "Krishna: Lord of Vrindavan," featuring images of the Hindu god Krishna taken from UMFA's Asian art collection.
