Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox formed a committee Tuesday to study the possible expansion of voting via the Internet.
Utah was among the first states to introduce electronic voting for a few voters. Since 1998, it has allowed overseas citizens and members of the military to vote electronically. This year, the Legislature also made it an option for disabled voters.
The new 14-member iVote Advisory Committee includes Cox, legislators, county clerks and technology and security specialists. It will explore, among other issues, how to ensure that e-voting is secure, how to keep ballots secret and how to allow a secure audit system to guarantee the accuracy of vote counts.
The committee aims to complete a study by year's end and provide findings to the Legislature.
