South Jordan police were looking Tuesday for an armed and dangerous robbery suspect who abandoned his getaway vehicle and fled on foot.

SJPD spokesman Samuel Winkler said the suspect — identified as known gang member Dennis James Monard — was confronted about 8 p.m. Monday by a Walmart store security officer who suspected he had been shoplifting.

The 37-year-old Monard — described as 6-foot-1, 160 pounds, with hazel eyes, short brown hair and with tattoos on his arms, legs and neck — allegedly pulled a handgun, threatened the officer and ran from the store at 11328 S Jordan Gateway (250 West).

Monard then jumped into a white Ford pickup truck with a raised suspension and black wheels. Police located the vehicle a short time later in a neighborhood just west of the store, Winkler said.

A search of the area proved fruitless.

"As there was a report of a firearm, the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous. If anyone has information on this suspect, they are advised to call 911 immediately," Winkler said.

State court records show Monard has an extensive criminal history that includes firearms, escape, theft and auto theft-related charges.
