That big splash Real Salt Lake fans have clamored for in 2014 could be gaining steam.On the eve of the August transfer window closing Wednesday, Real Salt Lake is rumored to be in discussions for 27-year-old Argentinean forward Sebastian Jaime. The striker of Club Union Espanola has played in Chile's Primera Division since 2011. Canal del Futbol, a cable TV station in Chile — known as CDF — reported a probable impending move by RSL for Jaime. According to the report, Jaime's contract with Union Espanola ends this December. The report also states that Jaime has scored 39 goals in 124 matches with Union Espanola. According to Chilean publication El Grafico, Jaime did not train with Union Espanola Tuesday and that the forward's arrival to Major League Soccer is "imminent." But in the wake of reports coming out of Chile, Real Salt Lake said no deal is done. "Real Salt Lake is aware of the reports connecting the club to the reports of the player in question," said RSL team spokesman Trey Fitz-Gerald, "however at this point, we do not have a signed player."A native of La Plata, Argentina, Jaime has been at Union Espanola in Santiago, Chile, for three seasons. Prior to that, he was at club La Serena in Chile for a year. Jaime started his professional career playing for Defensores de Cambaceres of Argentina's fourth-division league from 2008 and 2009 before moving to the country's second division with Argentinos Juniors for two years. The Tribune spoke to RSL general manager Garth Lagerwey on July 28 pertaining to the August transfer window closing on Aug. 6. He said both he and RSL coach Jeff Cassar had been exploring options, but reiterated that the preference is to keep the team as constituted. But the club went into a rut, understandably, when stars Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando went to Brazil with the U.S. men's national team for seven weeks and all-time leading scorer Alvaro Saborio broke a bone in his foot in late May that will likely keep him out until at least the end of September or early October."We're always going to be conservative about player movement, particularly in season," Lagerwey said on July 28.Lagerwey has reiterated that if the club was to add a player, it would need to create a roster spot by trading or waiving a player since the current number of allotted spots are maxed out. It's a one-in, one-out situation, if RSL indeeds adds a player. The Tribune will have more on the reported chase of Sebastian Jaime should things progress.
