Carbon County searchers have recovered a Herriman man's body from Scofield Reservoir.
Jaran Cruz, 33, was fishing with two other men in a 14-foot canoe Saturday evening when it capsized, "due to movement in the canoe," according to a Carbon County Sheriff's Office news release. They tried to upright the canoe, but were unsuccessful, according to the release.
While one man stayed with the canoe, Cruz and the other man tried swimming to shore, said Carbon County Chief Deputy Tom Stefanoff.
The other man made it to shore but Cruz was struggling, according to the release.
Several people nearby tried to reach Cruz in their boats, but could not find him, the release adds. The boaters did rescue the man who stayed with the canoe, Stefanoff added.
The sheriff's office received a call about the canoe about 6:50 p.m.
Utah State Parks officers and Carbon County Sheriff's Office dive members searched for Cruz, ultimately finding his body shortly after midnight about 100 feet from shore in 20-foot-deep water.
Divers recovered his body, which has been taken to the medical examiner's office.
There were no life jackets in the canoe, according to the sheriff's office.
