The Air Force detonated two ballistic missile rocket motors on Tuesday, causing a boom that was heard in Tooele and Davis counties.

The motors were part of Trident I ballistic missiles that are being eliminated as part of the START treaties. Only the rocket motors and propellants were destroyed, according to a press release from Hill Air Force Base. No nuclear material was part of the detonation.

When the motor and propellant is detonated, it creates a boom and shockwave as good as a conventional bomb.

The detonations Tuesday were at 11:39 a.m. and 1:12 p.m.
