Logan • Utah State rebounded, got to the line, got turnovers — almost every advantage a basketball team could hope to have.

But cold shooting doomed the Aggies (1-1), as the team took its first loss on Thursday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Saint Mary's shot lights out from 3-point range, and although the Gaels suffered from foul trouble, Utah State couldn't make them pay in a 67-58 defeat.

The game was considered to be one of the toughest nonconference matches for the Aggies, and they approached it as such, starting out on a 9-3 run. But the early fire was short-lived, as the Gaels took the lead midway through the first half and never let go.

In all, Saint Mary's shot 45.7 percent for the game, but 40.9 percent behind the arc. Utah State, by contrast, showed unsure scoring hands by shooting only 32.3 percent for the game. Star guard Preston Medlin was held to seven points.

Junior center Jarred Shaw led the Utah State effort with a hearty 17-point, 15-rebound effort. But poor free-throw shooting also hurt the Aggies, who missed the front end of a one-in-one foul five times in the game.
